Bespoke Footwear

Bespoke footwear is more than just a pair of shoes or boots, it’s the enjoyment of enduring luxury, shaped by time, craftsmanship, and the highest standards.

Berluti’s atelier in the heart of Paris, just moments away from the Rue Marbeuf store, is where we dedicate ourselves to the art of bespoke shoemaking. Everyone in this hushed setting is focused on excellence, crafting each shoe to satisfy the most individual tastes. The only limit here is the client’s imagination; in terms of shape, material and detailing, anything becomes possible in our quest to provide them with their perfect shoe.

Crafting a bespoke shoe is like a journey, where it's essential to establish a fluid dialogue and exchange of ideas between client and shoemaker.

During their first appointment, they’ll discuss the client’s habits, the style he's aiming for, and his personal sense of what’s comfortable. Next, his feet will be precisely and comprehensively measured, and his posture, gait and way of holding his body will all be carefully observed.

These measurements are reproduced on a hand-carved wooden last, a unique matrix in tangible form of the foot’s every dimension – and one that will serve the client for decades to come.

Our technical savoir-faire is underpinned by a repertoire of thousands of archive photographs and watercolours, so clients can browse the myriad choices of lacing, perforations, and soles. Little by little, they form an idea of how they want their shoe to look and feel.

Three months later at the second appointment, a “mockup” pair is presented. The client tries on his shoes for the first time – still in their prototype form. He'll walk around in them to gauge how they feel. Then the shoemaker slices into these fitting shoes with a scalpel to expose pressure points and understand the intimate dynamics of the fit. Now the shape can be adjusted to the millimetre, until the perfect balance of comfort and elegance is achieved.

Each pair of Berlutis takes between fifty and sixty hours to craft, drawing on know-how that’s been passed down generations since the company’s inception in 1895. All our footwear is entirely handmade in France, ranging from featherlight loafers to stiff riding boots, and from a refined welted construction to the most rugged Norwegian stitching.

The final stage is the patina, the finishing touch that sets the shoes apart. Each colour is applied by hand using an artistic technique that utterly transforms the shoe’s character.

Finally, after several months of waiting, comes the third appointment: the delivery. Now in their chosen leather and finished form, the shoes are presented and handed over to the client.
