Ecodesign

Everything we do is informed by circular thinking, from the threads we use to our store design. Luxury should be regenerative, as well as inspiring wonder, so we craft objects and transform materials without depleting the environment.

Ecodesign is a cornerstone of our model – one conceived to endure and to regenerate.

In 2023 Berluti began to fundamentally rethink its development processes through the pivotal Eco Design Refresh Meeting, bringing together the Maison’s design, development and production teams.

This event provides a forum for revisiting ecodesign principles, sharing best practices and harnessing innovation as a tool for measurable sustainability.

It's spearheaded by Professor Carole Collet of Central Saint Martins, who also directs Maison/0 (the Central Saint Martins–LVMH creative platform for regenerative luxury) set up in 2017 as a means to prototype regenerative luxury through design: producing less, but better, while respecting living systems.

Berluti now uses an in-house assessment tool to guide this transformation – a matrix that determines an eco-score for each collection. By measuring the proportion of ecodesigned products by category (leather, knitwear, ready-to-wear), this indicator helps track progress towards the goal of 100% ecodesigned items by 2030.

The Maison is also building a holistic circular model that integrates repairs, pre-owned sales, rentals, and the upcycling of materials. In 2021 we started working with Nona Source, LVMH’s online resale platform for “re-sourcing” exceptional materials. The first initiative of its kind in the luxury sector, Nona Source offers emerging creatives and brands access to high-quality fabrics and leathers from the Group’s deadstocks. Berluti now repurposes nearly 30% of its fabric and textile offcuts so these precious materials get a second life, for example through the Forestière collection.

The remaining 70% of scraps are collected by a textile-waste recycler to be sorted, and then reused – depending on their composition – in fertilizers, insulation foam or padding for the automotive industry.

This ethos is also manifest in the architecture of our retail spaces. Berluti’s Milan store recently won an interior design award in recognition of its ecofriendly features (certified wood, leather recycled from scraps, advanced waste sorting system).
