Neelam Cinema

Against the backdrop of Chandigarh’s Neelam Cinema, sleek tailoring, accessories and eyewear take on Berluti’s DNA through unique patina effects.

One of three theatres built in Chandigarh under the supervision of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, Neelam Cinema was designed in the early 1950’s by Indian architect Aditya Prakash. A rigorous modernist box at first glance, under its functional external shell it hides a playful, free flowing interior made of concrete curves and geometrical patterns meant to amplify the theatre’s acoustic.

Decorated with a minimalist spirit and a variety of luminous neutral shades, its interior matches the Berluti’s clean-cut tailoring pieces from the Winter 2019 Collection. Paying homage to the Maison’s DNA, Kris Van Assche takes on the emblematic hand-made patina used on shoes and accessories, applying it to a formal suit made from thin Vitello Fiore leather. Another suit, made from very supple nappa lamb skin, is lined in signature Scritto jacquard and can be worn with a lush nappatura hoodie.

Shoes include the new “Alessandro Edge”, a variation on Berluti’s emblematic lace-up oxford made from a single piece of leather, first designed in 1895. Taking on a bold new angular silhouette, it is further enhanced with Kris Van Assche’s “Cloudy Brown” patina, an innovative, cloudy-effect colour treatment. Requiring a much more delicate process than a classic patina - and three times as much dedication -, clouds of colour are first applied as the shoe is assembled. Then, once soled, the colour is waxed and polished extensively to guarantee proper absorption. Patinated Venezia leather is also featured on the new “Complice” bag, a mid-sized cross-body bag that can also be worn by hand.

Finally, the Berluti x Thélios eyewear collaboration further explores the idea through a mirror treatment with a patina-ombré effect applied to sunglass lenses, in two distinctive shades (Blue Flash and Red Flash). Models include “Halo” - a round shape with an acetate frame -, “Bright” - a classic metal Pilot with Berluti’s logo printed on the lenses - and “Neon” - a rectangular shape with an acetate frame and a branded metal plate.
